I’ve gone the DIY route in the past with pipe insulation and gaffer tape/velcro, and no, this product doesn’t function any better to keep a tripod comfortable while slung over your shoulder. It does, however, make it easy to install and remove the padding as desired, and it’s a very slim increase in diameter while still providing much needed comfort. The neoprene backing also keeps the pads from rotating, which is something I did not like about the DIY padding I had used in the past. I decided that after spending a lot of cash on the Really Right Stuff TVC-33/BH-55 combo (which is awesome), that it’d be a shame to make it look ratty with a DIY setup. I’m very happy with my decision to go with LensCoat, and I’ll be purchasing more to replace the DIY setup on my travel tripod as well.
