Lens filters change the property of light before it hits your sensor. A neutral density filter reduces the light (like sunglasses do) while a fluorescent filter removes the greenish tint that fluorescents can cast, allowing you to mix these sources with other lights.If you’re wondering what a step-up ring is used for, basically all lenses are built with different filter sizes. This can make buying filters a bit tricky. Let’s say if you have a 28mm with a 58mm filter thread size, a 50mm with a 55mm filter size and an 85mm with a 52mm filter size, that’s three different sets of filters you may need to purchase for these lenses.Step-up rings are an inexpensive way to help alleviate that problem. Now you can buy one set of filters at one filter size (all of my filters are 77mm which is why I bought this one) while still being able to use them on different lens sizes. They’re not perfect, and you may run into issues with graduated filters and circular polarizers, but general speaking most of your filters will work well here. Don’t forget a filter wrench in case they get stuck!

I use this adaptor to attach a special solar filter (77mm filter size) on a new lens (72mm diameter). It works great and goes on and off the lens smoothly. It has a good fit and finish with no rough spots. Since the filter is a larger diameter than the lens, I don’t have any vignetting that could happen if the filter were smaller than the lens. This saved me the money to buy another filter. Recommended.

This works just fine as advertised. Do be aware if it is not obvious that putting a smaller filter on a larger lens with this step up ring means you wind up vignetting your shot with a black circle just by the nature of the beast.

The sizing is not correct on this, it is too large. Not 46mm. This item is closer to 48mm. You can see the differences in the picture when compared to another adapter that is 58mm-46mm that works for my application. Will try and order again to see if this was a one off QC mistake.(UPDATE)Ordered same size again, this one had correct sizing to what was written in the product itself and description.
