I like a retro aesthetic as much as anyone but a product that uses this vibe needs to be able to properly blend form and function. There are plenty of products able to do this. For example, I’ve got a Tivoli Audio streaming radio on my desk at work. It looks gorgeous and works great. On the other hand, there are plenty of products that go with a retro look to cover up the fact that they bring nothing else to the table. The GODOX Lux Series of camera flashes are definitely the former and not the latter. GODOX has earned a solid rep among content creators for making first rate products all across the price point continuum. In particular, they’re regarded as the ‘go to’ brand for excellent value priced flash kits. That’s exactly what we’ve got with the Lux Series, only with a very unique retro aesthetic. I already had the Lux Senior and Junior–both of which have received frequent use due to their quality and performance–and I was happy to add their recent release, the Lux Cadet to my lineup. The Cadet occupies the mid range of the Lux range between the lower priced Junior and higher priced Senior. When I say ‘higher price’ it isn’t by much and given just how well they all perform the reasonable price point of all three models is impressive. The Cadet really leans into the retro aesthetic. Were it not for the USB-C port it could pass for something out of your granddad’s attic. Unless I missed something, this colorway is the only one available for the Cadet as opposed to the rainbow of colors available for the Senior. Of course, the initial release of the Senior was only one color IIRC and the rest came later on.This might not be a flash for a professional photographer, but it’s perfect for a novice just getting into it. It’s also great for someone like me–I’m more of a ‘content creator’. I’m primarily a writer but I often do audio, photos and videos to accompany my work. This type of product is perfect for my needs. I used this with my Nikon Z-30 and it worked great. Unless you have more sophisticated needs for a flash kit you can’t go wrong with any of the entries from the GODOX Lux Line–a great flash for basic needs that also happens to look awesome. Highly recommended!

Rocking a very cool vintage vibe with essential modern convenience, this little flash pairs perfectly if you have one of those retro-looking cameras like the Nikon Zfc or a Fuji, but even if you don’t, it still works to give you and your gear a unique look. It’s also quite the conversation starter, especially when you flick those petal reflectors open. There’s a slight learning curve to it if you use the Manual mode, but it’s well worth learning to minimize that bright “flash-y” look. Oh, and the battery lasts forever. Just remember that this isn’t aspiring to be a pro-level speedlight with TTL, the ability to bounce the light, HSS, or the like. It’s a simple flash that does a straightforward job, but does it with a lot of style.

This is a relatively small camera flash with some modern features. I tried it with my GH4 and a manual lens and got nice images. It can be charged via USB-C and can be triggered a few different ways. The internal battery is long lasting, but it can’t be changed out. A USB-A to USB-C cord and a 2.5mm to sync cord is included.Although the flash is directional, it has a pleasant light quality with the bare bulb and retractable light reflector. The light quality is still specular, but not as harsh as I expected. One potential con is that while the bulb retracts while not in use, it’s still exposed and unsure if it can be replaced. On the back there is a meter dial and flash power controls. It also has an automatic mode that assumes you are shooting at ISO 100 and F 2.8. When using the auto mode, I would be careful not to block the optical sensor on the front, or the flash will fire at full power. You can get good results using the auto mode, but I mostly used the flash in manual for full control.Overall, this retro flash is worth checking out if you are looking for this aesthetic and specular light quality.

This is a very vintage looking camera flash. Goes prefect with my new FujiFilm X100VI camera. All the settings are controlled by the analog dial. Easy to setup, and very powerful for the size. It fits nicely on my X100VI. I love it has built in rechargeable battery, so I never have to worry about getting AA batteries. I do with the flash head can be tilted, so I can try to bounce the light off the wall. But overall its a cute light, and powerful.

Honestly, I kinda thought this was a gimmick flash, but gave it a try anyway. I can honestly say, WOW! I’m honestly SHOCKED at how well the photos turned out with this flash! I’m an off camera flash photographer 90% of the time, on camera mostly for events or receptions, and I’m SUPER happy with this little flash! It’s not a Godox V1 – and I’m sure the rechargeable (non-removable) battery wouldn’t last an entire event, but I love this little thing! Beautiful light on the subject for nice up-close portraits without over powering flash in the eyeballs.
